- Cinnamon reduces levels of blood sugar and has a potent antidiabetic effect
Cinnamon is known to reduce blood sugar. Aside from the beneficial effects on insulin resistance, cinnamon may help the blood sugar by other mechanisms. First, it has been shown to decrease the amount of glucose entering the bloodstream after a meal. It does this by interfering with numerous digestive enzymes, slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates in the digestive tract.
Furthermore, a compound of cinnamon can act on cells through insulin mimicry. This would greatly enhance the glucose uptake by cells, although much slower acting insulin itself.
Numerous studies have confirmed these antidiabetic effects of cinnamon, to the point that it can lower the levels of fasting blood sugar by up to 30%. The effective dose would be between 1 and 6 grams of cinnamon daily (on average and 2 teaspoons).
- Cinnamon may have beneficial effects on neurodegenerative diseases
These diseases are characterized by a progressive loss of structure or function of the brain cells. The most common are Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Two compounds found in cinnamon help inhibit the accumulation of a protein called tau in the brain, which is one of the hallmarks of the disease Alzheirmer. Moreover, different animal tests have shown that cinnamon helped protect neurons, normalize neurotransmitter levels and improve motor function.
- Cinnamon has protective effects against cancer
Cinnamon has been widely studied for its potential in the prevention and treatment of cancer use. Overall, the evidence is limited to experiments performed in tubes and animal studies, but I suggest that it may protect against cancer. Thus, cinnamon reduce growth of cancerous cells and the formation of blood vessels in tumors, and appears to be toxic to cancer cells, causing cell death.
- Cinnamon helps fight bacterial and fungal infections
The cinnamaldehyde (main component of cinnamon), helps fight infection types. Also, cinnamon oil has been shown to be treated so very effective respiratory tract infections caused by fungi. Also inhibits the growth of certain bacteria, including Salmonella and Listeria. Finally, helps prevent cavities and reduce bad breath.
- Cinnamon may help fight the HIV virus
This virus slowly attacks the immune system to the point of ending it, which can eventually lead to developing AIDS if not pretreated. Different varieties of cinnamon help in the fight against HIV-1, which is the most common strain of HIV virus in humans. In fact, several studies found that is one of the few effective medicinal plants have been studied.
